Job Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor, this position is being offered as a full-time permanent staff compliment to the Transit Department (Maintenance Division). Duties will include but not be restricted to:
- Lays out, builds, tests, troubleshoots, repairs and modifies developmental and production electronic components, parts, equipment, and systems, such as Smartbus technologies, destination signs, communication equipment, fare collection equipment and other Transit related equipment and systems.
- Ability to develop, maintain and operate test equipment by applying principles and theories of electronics and electrical circuitry.
- Discusses layout and assembly of procedures and problems with manufactures and ability to draw sketches to clarify design details and functional criteria of electronic units.
- Assembles experimental circuitry (breadboard) or complete prototype model according to engineering instructions, technical manuals, and knowledge of electronic systems and components.
- Recommends changes in circuitry or installation specifications to simplify assembly and maintenance.
- Sets up standard test apparatus or devises test equipment and circuitry to conduct functional, operational, environmental, and life tests to evaluate performance and reliability of prototype or production model.
- Analyses and interprets test data.
- Adjusts, calibrates, aligns, and modifies circuitry and components and records effects on unit performance.
- Writes technical reports and develops charts, graphs, and schematics to describe and illustrate system’s operating characteristics, malfunctions, deviations from design specifications, and functional limitations for consideration by engineers in broader determinations affecting system design and laboratory procedures.
- May instruct and provide guidance to other technical personnel.
- Diagnose electrical problems and simulate conditions.
- Repair test equipment as required.
- Search for substitute parts for out-of-stock or out-of-production replacement parts, and check the specifications of substitute parts.
- Input and retrieve vehicle repair information from the Fleet Maintenance System.
- Complete other routine forms, records or reports, including minor written reports on work inspected.
- Performs other similar and related duties to this position, as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Grade 12 education or equivalent secondary education as established by the Ontario Ministry of Education.
- Successful completion of Community College courses in electronics or equivalent.
- 3 years of related experience in the electronics field.
- Ability to work with circuit board components.
- Demonstrated ability to read and understand schematic diagrams.
- Able to work shifts and variable hours.
- Able to handle physical demands of the job.
- Able to work outside and in all weather conditions.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with an emphasis on customer service.
- Strong time management and organizational skills.
- Able to work independently and as part of a team in a fast paced environment.
- Able to wear required personal protective equipment and use appropriate safety equipment to complete job tasks in a safe manner.
- Must be resourceful and have initiative to work with little supervision.
- Must hold (or have the ability to obtain as a condition of employment) and provide a copy of a valid and unrestricted Ontario Driver’s License Class C with a Z air brake endorsement with a driving record that demonstrates responsible and safe driving behaviour. Note: Applicants with 6 or more points are ineligible for consideration.
- The successful applicant, who is a new hire, will be required to provide the Corporation with a current drivers abstract (no older than 30 days) prior to assuming the position.
