Job Description

Our Lakefield, ON laboratory is looking for a safety-conscious Sample Pickup Driver to join our team! This position is responsible for the transportation of environmental samples between client locations and our SGS laboratory. The successful candidate will be responsible for driving company vehicles to designated client sites, collecting coolers containing environmental samples, transporting samples safely and securely, and delivering them to the laboratory within established timelines.

This position requires excellent attention to detail, a strong commitment to health and safety, dependable customer service, and the ability to work independently while following established procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate company vehicles safely and responsibly while travelling to and from client locations following all company health and safety polices.
  • Follow assigned routes and schedules to ensure timely sample pickup and delivery.
  • Must be available and willing to work flexible hours which could include rotating schedules.
  • Pick up coolers and containers of environmental samples from client sites.
  • Verify that sample coolers and associated documentation are properly identified and accounted for at the time of pickup.
  • Handle, load, secure, transport, and unload sample coolers in accordance with laboratory procedures.
  • Take the temperature of samples upon receipt and maintain appropriate sample temperature and handling conditions during transportation, as required by laboratory procedures and applicable project requirements.
  • Deliver samples to the laboratory within required holding times and established schedules.
  • Complete chain-of-custody documentation and other required records accurately and promptly, including scanning and emailing documents with the use of mobile devices.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the vehicle and sample transportation equipment.
  • Perform routine vehicle inspections and report maintenance or safety concerns promptly.
  • Refuel vehicles and ensure they remain in suitable operating condition.
  • Maintain professional and courteous communication with clients and laboratory staff.
  • Ensure full compliance with SGS’s Health and Safety, Code of Integrity, and Professional Conduct Policies and applicable regulations
  • Participate in safety training and other training required for the position, including Defensive Driving, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, and WHMIS (provided)
  • Maintain a safe and satisfactory driving record
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

The position may require:

  • Frequent driving and extended periods of sitting.
  • Frequent entering and exiting of vehicles.
  • Lifting and carrying sample coolers and containers, potentially on uneven surfaces or stairs.
  • Bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, and other material-handling activities.
  • Working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Visiting industrial, commercial, municipal, construction, and other client sites.
  • Working around vehicles, equipment, industrial operations, and potentially hazardous materials.
  • Occasional schedule flexibility to accommodate client pickup requirements and laboratory sample holding times.

Candidates must be capable of safely performing the physical requirements of the position, with accommodation provided in accordance with applicable legislation.

Qualifications

  • Education:  High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be able to read, understand and follow work instructions in a safe, accurate and timely manner.
  • Valid driver’s licence with a clean or acceptable driving record.
  • Previous courier, delivery, logistics, laboratory, environmental, or field-service experience is an asset.
  • Experience driving a cargo van, pickup truck, or similar vehicle is an asset.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple scheduled pickups and deliveries.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to accurately complete documentation.
  • Professional and courteous communication skills.
  • Ability to safely lift, carry, push, and pull sample coolers and other materials up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to work outdoors and in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to follow written procedures and health and safety instructions.
  • Ability to work well with others as well as independently
  • Basic computer or mobile-device skills for completing electronic records, schedules, or delivery documentation.

Additional Information

Salary: starting at $19.50 per hour.
