POSITION TITLE: Senior Commodity Buyer – Machining & Fabrication
LOCATION: Collingwood, Owen Sound, Barrie, North Bay, Sudbury

About the Position: The Senior Commodity Buyer provides strategic and technical procurement leadership for machined and fabricated components. The role develops and executes long-term commodity strategies, builds capable and competitive supplier networks, leads outsourcing and supplier-development initiatives, and ensures continuity of supply, quality, delivery, cost competitiveness, and commercial compliance in support of Engineering, Production, new product introduction, and capital projects
This position requires the following proficiencies:
- Lead sourcing initiatives for machined components, fabricated parts, weldments, fabricated structures, and related outsourced manufacturing services
- Develop and maintain multi-year commodity strategies that address capacity, capability, cost, quality, lead time, localization, dual sourcing, and business continuity
- Lead supplier identification, evaluation, qualification, and development activities to ensure supplier capability, capacity, quality, and competitiveness.
- Manage supplier performance and lead continuous improvement initiatives focused on quality, delivery, responsiveness, cost, and risk reduction.
- Prepare and lead RFQs, supplier negotiations, contract discussions, and long-term supply agreements.
- Perform total cost analysis and evaluate supplier quotations to support strategic sourcing and procurement decisions.
- Lead supplier audits, capability assessments, development plans, corrective-action follow up, and formal performance reviews in partnership with Supplier Development, Quality, Engineering, and Operations
- Support new product introductions, capital projects, and production requirements by providing sourcing expertise, market intelligence, and supplier engagement.
- Partner with Engineering to review drawings, specifications, tolerances, materials, weld requirements, manufacturing methods, and design-for-manufacturability opportunities
- Identify and mitigate supply chain risks through alternate sourcing strategies, supplier development activities, and business continuity planning.
- Lead resolution of supplier-related issues including capacity constraints, delivery recovery, quality concerns, cost challenges, and commercial disputes.
- Develop and maintain strong supplier relationships while representing the Company in commercial and contractual discussions.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to resolve shortages, support production schedules, and improve procurement processes.
- Mentor and support junior purchasing team members while promoting procurement best practices and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Maintain accurate purchasing, sourcing, and supplier records in accordance with Company policies and procedures.
About You: The successful candidate(s) must be a strategic thinker with strong technical and commercial purchasing experience in a manufacturing environment. You will possess excellent communication, negotiation, and supplier relationship management skills, along with the ability to work effectively across multiple departments.
This role requires the following qualifications:
- Post-secondary education in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Engineering Technology, Manufacturing, or a related field
- Professional supply chain or procurement designation is considered an asset
- 7+ years of progressive purchasing, strategic sourcing, or supply chain experience in a manufacturing environment
- Demonstrated experience leading strategic sourcing projects, complex commercial negotiations, supplier development, and contract implementation.
- Experience managing critical suppliers, constrained capacity, supplier recovery, and high-risk commodities.
- Experience supporting new product introduction, engineering projects, capital projects, and make-versus-buy or outsourcing decisions
- Strong negotiation, contract management, and cost analysis skills
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications and manufacturing requirements
- Experience with ERP/MRP systems; Microsoft Dynamics 365 experience is an asset
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel
